A dozen fae and dryads fussed over her, washing her, combing her, powdering her, bringing her snacks, presenting her wardrobe choices worthy of a queen. She was desperately looking at the door, searching for a way out, Silevon’s ominous words “Throw him into the Pit!” echoing in her mind. Alas, no possibility to escape presented itself, and she was led to the dining room, still dumbfounded by all this attention.

Two dryad pageboys swung the gilded fifteen-foot-tall doors to the dining room open. Sitting at the head of an extravagantly long table loaded with delicacies, lord Silevon dipped his chin in a polite greeting. Becky pulled the long train of the pearl-embroidered gown that hugged her slender figure and revealed too much for her taste. The lord raised a brow when he took in the intricate hairdo, the subtle choice of jewelry complimenting her dress and complexion, and the natural makeup that brought out the colors of her heterochromatic eyes.

“Regal and pure! Come, Becky, join me,” he gestured invitingly toward the long table loaded with extravagant delicacies. “I usually share a meal with my courtiers, but today, we have unusual circumstances.”

Becky pulled the heavy chair to his right. She remembered the lessons of her previous life all too well: if you want to entice and manipulate a man, you need to get close to him and convince him that whatever delusion he is dwelling in is important to you too.

Silevon followed her moves, a tall glass full of ruby wine in his hand, a veteran who had surely survived countless attempts at backstabbing, and one deadly coup. She sat down and started piling food on her plate, feeling the piercing gaze of her host on her skin.

“Pardon my curiosity, Becky, but I need to ask. Though it is obvious you are a copy of her except for the hair color. Is Aelinor indeed your mother?” The nobleman’s broad shoulders stiffened under the rich garment of his tunic, giving out how much it meant to him.

“Aelinor was my mother. From what I have gathered, she escaped to the human realm, where she met my father, Duncan, and here I am.” She chewed on the exquisite appetizers, trying to keep a calm appearance while her mind raced back to Sinvas and what he was going through now in the Pit.

“The usurper and his thugs burned the bodies, claiming that all perished that night. Justice, they called it. Justice!” the fae raised his voice, throwing his hands up. “The mad king called himself the Unifier, reassuring everyone he was to treat all his subjects equally—faeries, dryads, gnomes, elves, elementals, wraiths, sirens. Yet bloodshed and spectacular public executions were all he’s done so far. Even the noble houses, who initially supported him, hoping for more wealth and privilege to stream to them, are either dead or crippled… But I am letting my grudge lead the conversation again. Do tell me more, child. She survived then, just like I imagined it, and built a life for herself there, typically Aelinor.
